JSBM INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION 2023 -
“10 Years JSBM Hong Kong”
Mission & Vision
The Competition at Johann Sebastian Bach Music Academy (Hong Kong) is organised in cooperation with Johann Sebastian Bach Musikschule in Vienna, Austria. It is intended to strengthen pupils’ confidence in their performance abilities. It is not to be competitive amongst one another or between students in the same grade. Each participant should gain an overall positive experience which will help to boost their willingness to practice and to improve.
Also, the JSBM Competition will be a meaningful middle step on the preparation path for other national or international competitions. Unlike many other competitions, there will be no winners or losers, as instead, we shall be finding something praiseworthy in each performance. Your child’s confidence will therefore be enhanced by this approach.
Our ultimate goal is to further enrich our programme for gifted young musicians in order to support and assist those of our students who are dedicated to becoming professional musicians in the future.
Additionally, each child will receive a certificate of participation to highlight an element of their performance strength.

Composition Competition
The Composition Competition at JSBM Hong Kong is organized in cooperation with our sister school in Vienna Johann Sebastian Bach Musikschule Wien. This year we introduce a new transdisciplinary project that combines arts & music into one new experience. How colors can sound, and how tones can look: inventing music is as creative a process as painting a picture.
Slow and fast, loud and quiet, jagged or round, soulful or angry?
Paint with one hand, left and right, with your fingers or pen, brush, in pairs or in the group. This is how the two hemispheres of the brain are brought into play. It promotes concentration, listening, distinguishing, sensitivity, communication...
Inspired by the different colours of the pictures, the musicians look for appropriate timbres on their instruments: long, calm tones, loud or quiet, plucked, staccato or with strong stroke, played with the pedal on the piano or on the flute head?
The color compositions lead to sound compositions that can be compared with each other and together create a new duo: "Painting by Tones - Playing by Colours".
- draw a picture that you think can 'sound'
- write a music work (own composition) to your picture
- perform & video tape it
There are four age categories:
The entire process can be done at home or in the neighborhood. The idea is that the children after drawing their pictures, can experiment with their own musical instruments (if they play and have any) or use different objects from their surroundings to produce sound and noises, which could be organized in a music piece (the music must be related to the picture that they have created beforehand!). The piece should be submitted in a written form (use notation or playing guidance) and performed (videotaped). The video must not be edited, and it should include the playing guide (if any) as well as the notation that must be visible in the film.
Important: while you can use any picture that inspires you to compose music, only self-composed music pieces are allowed for submission! Don't forget to submit your picture or a soft copy of the drawing that has inspired you to us!
Please create a folder on an online cloud storage platform (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox, One Drive, etc.). and share with the here mentioned.: submit four documents (1) music score and drawing + (2) video file of the performance) + (3) your contact details (incl. name, telephone, birthday, correspond address) + (4) payment slip by email to [email protected]
